We present the Armstrong Foils Performance Mast A+ System.
A structural analysis shows that a combination of high modulus (HM) and intermediate modulus (IM) carbon fibers best distributes the loads across the different areas of the mast. The stiffness of HM minimizes bending in the central strut area of the mast, while the high tensile strength of IM accommodates the complex shapes of the upper plate and hull connection.
The result is a performance mast consisting of premium materials, a new mast section, a refined base plate, a drag-reducing fuse connection, and a new construction method. Proprietary titanium M7 mast top hardware provides a strong, lightweight, and drag-reducing connection to the board.
These masts are designed with a mast rake angle. This finely tunes the angle of the board in relation to the Foil for a more comfortable and forgiving ride. It does not change the buoyancy or balance of the Foils itself and has no influence on the "foot pressure" preload of the Foils at the front or rear. The rocker of the board also directly determines the effective mast rake - boards from different brands have a variety of different rocker lines that influence the rake angle - and more rocker in the rear half of the board effectively increases the mast rake. The 1-degree rake, which has been specifically incorporated into the upper part of the Performance Mast Shape, offers three key advantages by adjusting the board relative to the Foil underwater:
By bringing the Foil closer to 0 degrees when the board is in the water, drag is reduced, making it easier to get started.
Touching down at speed or landing a jump is more forgiving, and there is less risk of falling headfirst over the board.
By slightly raising the board nose (1 degree = 17.46 mm/m), the mast rake makes it easier to ride fast without the nose catching at steep angles of descent.
