The original from the inventor of surf helmets, featuring audio vents for better hearing. This helmet is extremely lightweight, so you’ll barely notice you’re wearing one. During development, special attention was paid to minimizing water resistance to reduce the risk of neck injuries during waves. Of course, all Gath helmets are completely corrosion-resistant and dry extremely quickly. Since 1989, when Australian pro surfer Rick Gath first unveiled his helmet to the public, Gath helmets have been the standard by which the competition is measured—not just among surfers. A perfect fit both on land and in the water, minimal weight, and minimal water and air resistance have made Gath helmets famous far beyond the surfing scene. No wonder, then, that Gath helmets are the top choice among kiters, jet skiers, kayakers, and wingfoilers when it comes to a perfect fit, maximum functionality, and absolute safety.

Gath

The world's first surf helmet, built in a garage in Margaret River

Gath Sports is an Australian helmet brand founded by Ricky Gath, a Western Australian state surfing champion and two-time winner of the Margaret River Surf Classic. The story behind the brand is a concrete one: Ricky had suffered from severe earaches for years due to spending many hours in cold water and riding big waves, and he regularly had to visit the doctor to get head wounds stitched up. In the mid-1980s, he began developing the first prototypes in his garage in Margaret River, hand-molding the shapes and applying for patent protection. In 1989, Dave Macaulay wore the first finished Gath helmet at the Margaret River Masters and won the event. The following year, Gary Elkerton won the Pipe Masters wearing a Gath helmet, and Tom Carroll repeated the feat in 1991.

From the surfing helmet to the standard in all water sports

What began as protective gear for surfers was quickly embraced by the broader water sports community. In the early 1990s, windsurfers, kitesurfers, bodyboarders, and kayakers adopted the Gath helmet. Today, Gath is also recognized by the U.S. Navy, the French Coast Guard, and the Australian Surf Life Saving Association. The brand has received the Australian Design Award, the Honor Award for Design Innovation in the Surfing Industry, and has been inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame. Gath Sports remains a family-owned business based in Western Australia to this day.

Lightweight, low-profile, without compromise

The basic design of the Gath helmet has remained unchanged since the 1980s: lightweight polycarbonate combined with Wetsuit for a snug, comfortable fit, low-profile enough not to hinder the rider, and durable enough for the toughest conditions. Precise injection molding technology, ergonomic design, and genuine water sports feedback gathered over decades make the Gath helmet the benchmark in a category it pioneered.
